Summer and Lead Poisoning

• If your house was built before 1950 and you open windows in the summer, check
  to see if your windows have lead paint. The opening and shutting of the window
  can cause lead dust which is harmful.
• Before doing any remodeling or renovation in a home built prior to 1950, find out
  how to do the work safely. Disturbing the lead paint (even if it is behind layers of
  latex paint, will create lead dust which is harmful.

  Effects of Lead Poisoning:
  Most Children Show No Symptoms!!

  Warning signs of lead poisoning may include:

  • stomach pains, constipation, frequent vomiting, or poor appetite
  • sleep problems, irritability, tiredness or headache
  • clumsiness, weakness, or loss of recently learned skills

  Lead Poisoning has been CLEARLY associated with:

  • aggressive behavior
  • changes in attention levels
  • delays in speech
  • attention deficit disorder
  • hyperactivity
  • violent behavior
  • learning disabilities
  • mental retardation
  • convulsion
  • hearing loss
  • reduction of motor control/balance
• Past use of lead paint and leaded gasoline can cause an increase of lead in the soil.
  Cover bare soil with grass or mulch. Give your child a safe place to play
  outdoors, like a sandbox. Wash children's hands and toys frequently.
