Mary Frances Crowe began her career at the Allegany County Health Department in 1988 as a Steno Clerk in the Physical Health Division’s Record Room. The hiring supervisor remembers her first impression of the 22-year old Mary Frances as a remarkably mature and professional young woman. Her strong work ethic and delightful personality became apparent as the interview progressed and Mary Frances responded to the questions with poise and well-thought answers. She was well prepared and organized, as every high-quality secretary is, and even had a few good questions for the panel. Her brief but quality experience, education and hint of humor made Mary Frances the obvious choice for the position.
Now some 20+ years later, Mary Frances has graciously matured into a highly skilled and knowledgeable member of the Physical Health Division. She has worked in various programs and was secretary to the Director of Child & Maternal Health until the position was eliminated. Currently, she holds an “essential” position on the School Health team working closely with the Director and supervisor while directly supervising a clerical position. She also demonstrates true professionalism as she provides outstanding administrative secretarial support to the many School Health nurses. “Mary Fran” (as she’s so fondly known) gives 110% so that School Health can maintain excellence and provide quality attention to public school students in Allegany County. The Director of School Health fondly compares her relationship with Mary Fran to that of the Colonel and Radar on the television series “MASH.” Mary Frances knows what the Director needs or wants sometimes before the Director does and often times Mary Frances has her role figured out before it’s even discussed with her.
Mary Frances is a wonderful example for other employees of the Allegany County Health Department. When told that additional work was being assigned to her (in a different area) Mary Fran contacted the Director and expressed gratitude and willingness to learn. She thanked her supervisor for entrusting her with these important duties and stated she was “excited about spreading her wings.” As always, Mary Frances promised to do her very best. In today’s world this is remarkable - especially after more than 20 years of employment.
The hint of humor in Mary Frances’ initial interview did not begin to reveal the delightful humor and wit that she shares every day. In the busy day-to-day events of School Health, Mary Fran’s ability to laugh and joke often relieve the high pressure and stress associated with the job. She has an amazing memory, knows where everything is at all times and knows how to handle any situation.
Congratulations, Mary Frances, on being selected the Allegany County Health Department’s August 2010 Employee of the Month. You truly deserve this honor for so many reasons! Thank you for all you do and thank you for all you give to others!
