Joseph S. Massie Unit


The Joseph S. Massie Unit provides comprehensive, high quality addictions treatment to individuals who are chemically dependent or abuse chemicals, and their significant others.  We work cooperatively with our community in achieving our purpose.

The Joseph S. Massie Unit is a multi-modality treatment facility for adults experiencing the devastating effects of alcoholism and other chemical dependency.  The Unit provides comprehensive, high quality treatment to individuals and their significant others.  

ASAM criteria are utilized to determine placement and length of stay is individualized, averaging 28 days.  A holistic treatment approach is utilized to address the issues necessary to maintain an abstinent lifestyle.

The Joseph S. Massie Unit is a tobacco-free facility.  Cessation assistance is provided.

Admissions and Referrals

Referrals area accepted from employee assistance programs, hospitals, private physicians, counseling and community agencies, lawyers, legal/judicial system and others.  Transportation is provided to and from the facility.

Health insurance generally covers the cost of treatment.  Fees are charged based upon ability to pay if insurance coverage does not cover treatment.


The Massie Unit is located on the grounds of the Thomas B. Finan Center, Cottage 4.


The Joseph S. Massie Unit believes that treatment should continue after completion of our residential treatment program.  An aftercare plan is developed with the patient and includes activities that results in ongoing recovery.   

These activities are based on the individualized need of the recovering person.  Referrals are made to the appropriate outpatient agencies and follow-up is accomplished by Massie Unit staff at 3, 6 and 12 months after discharge.

The staff of the Massie Unit includes Licensed Clinical Alcohol & Drug Counselors, Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselors; Physician/Nurse Practitioners; Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist; Consulting Psychiatrists; nursing personnel.
